Mardi Gras To Throw Harbour Party
New Mardi Gras have just announced that they are in discussions with the Botanic Gardens Trust to host an event at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair during their 30th Anniversary celebrations in February next year.
“An event during the Mardi Gras festival has been on the Trust’s annual event calendar for over a decade” says Dr Tim Entwisle, Executive Director of the Botanic Gardens Trust “and we are keen to continue that tradition.”
Marcus Bourget, Chair of New Mardi Gras said “We are delighted to be working with the Botanic Gardens Trust with a view to producing a signature event during next year’s Mardi Gras festivities. The 2008 Festival marks our 30th anniversary, and we are excited at the opportunity to celebrate this milestone at this iconic location.”
The Iris Group have run the Azure party on the site the week before the Mardi Gras Parade since 2003, and the event was controversially shut down early this year, but Dr Entwisle says the two are not linked. “The reason for our discussion with New Mardi Gras are possible because after 5 years the Iris Group event licence had expired.”
New Mardi Gras Chairman Marcus Bourget made the announcement at the AGM held on Saturday in Petersham.
Harbour Party began in 1998 and was produced by First Fleet Productions, who helped build its reputation as one the best gay and lesbian parties in the world. When the Harbour Party had run its lifecycle, the Botanic Gardens Trust ran a selection process and chose Iris Group Productions to establish a new event.
It’s a huge coup of Mardi Gras’ 30th anniversary year and puts them in a very strong place to make the next festival the best Mardi Gras ever.
