Darren Hayes - Don't Vote For Howard

Darren Hayes isn’t happy. He’s currently touring Australia, and he has brought his husband Richard Cullen out with him. But because their relationship isn’t considered valid here it’s always a debacle getting Richard into the country.

“Every time I come home there’s this whole kerfuffle,” Hayes told the Herald Sun. “We have to get Richard a visa. He’s my partner, I share my life with him… It makes me angry and frustrated… I’m Australian and the way the law sits I can’t bring my partner home as my partner.”

Hayes went onto say that it’s time for John Howard to go. “I would never have voted for John Howard and I encourage people not to. I don’t think he speaks for this country in the same way I don’t think George Bush speaks for the US.”

Since coming out, finding love and getting hitched Darren Hayes has found himself an accidental spokesperson for gay marriage.

“I love my record, I’d much rather be speaking about my record but at the same time I unwittingly become a spokesperson for something I really do believe in.”

Darren also plans to be a father one day, saying that he’d like to adopt. “It won’t happen for a while but it’s totally going to happen.”

Australia’s immigration laws may be offensive, however the Herald Sun’s use of inverted commas when referring to Richard as Darren’s “husband” could be deemed just as offensive.

Darren Hayes is currently touring Australia promoting his new album This Delicate Thing We’ve Made, which is in stores August 20.

I agree with Darren... men with Indian mail order brides are
recognised... why isn't his husband?

Onya Darren! But everyone needs to speak up - having the right
to marry doesn't mean you have to marry! Let's end the
discrimination across the board!!

Go Darren, Kick some political butt. And to Glenn - perhaps
this type of entrenched discrimination has something to do with
why he doesn't live here full time!!!
