Police Hit Oxford Street On Sunday

There was a strong police presence on Oxford Street on the weekend as Surry Hills Police carried out Operation Gilligans, resulting in a number of people being charged with various offences including assaulting police, affray (which is threatening violence towards another), resisting arrest and drug offences.

The operation targeted anti-social behaviour and drug related offences in the area. On Sunday morning a number of teams of police with sniffer dogs conducted sweeps of numerous licensed premises and local streets.

The list of charges handed out is indicative of the chaos that has descended upon the area. A number of drug offences, general public order offences and licensing issues were detected – one which resulted in the temporary closure of the club formerly known as Manacle. Police issued seven field court attendance notices for drug matters, one field court attendance notice for offensive conduct and three cannabis cautions.

In addition to these charges, a 19-year-old Newcastle man was charged with offensive conduct, a 23-year-old Marrickville man was charged with affray, assaulting police and resisting arrest, a 21-year-old man from Maroubra was charged with affray and a 36-year-old man from Dee Why was charged with drug possession. These people will appear in court next month.

A 39-year-old man from Bella Vista was charged with offensive conduct, resisting arrest and also had three outstanding warrants, a 26-year-old man from Sydney was charged with possession of implements and goods in custody, and a 30-year-old man from Wooloomooloo was charged with assaulting police and offensive language. All three were refused bail and will appear in court today.

It’s a shame that Clover Moore couldn’t have been present to see the chaos that obviously greeted Police last Sunday morning. Still, it’s good to see something being done about the state of our strip.
