Divinyls singer Chrissie Amphlett recently revealed that she has multiple sclerosis, a degenerative disease that affects the brain and spinal cord.
Chrissie, who played the sold out Homebake festival on the weekend along with Missy Higgins, said that she was diagnosed five years ago but has kept it out of the media because she was terrified and angry.
“There’s no road map. There’s no predictability. You are living with uncertainty. The only certainty is uncertainty.”
She said that she first started seeing the signs of the illness as far back as the late eighties.
“I just thought it was dehydration… Then [later] during The Boy From Oz, one of my legs in the last dream scene would start to wobble. There were these bits and pieces in between, little moments, falling over in restaurants.”
In an interview with Sydney Morning Herald, Amphlett said that when she told her husband, she gave him the opportunity to divorce her if he wanted, because she didn’t want to become a burden.
“He said, ‘Chrissie, this is life, and life happens.’”
Chrissie said that it’s still unknown how people contract the illness and that some days she is too ill to even get out of bed. In spite of this though, she still plans to rock Australia with the Divinyls’ national tour which will take place throughout December.
