On Your Marks, Get Set - Go!

Mardi Gras’ 30th anniversary kicks off this weekend with a launch at Moore Park on Saturday 9 February from 4pm. There’s going to be a commemorative tree planting which will mark the anniversary and the end of the world-famous Parade route.

The event will be co-hosted by Geoff Field and Julie McCrossin and will feature performances from our local talent, including Bob Downe, Jeremy Brennan and the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir. Key note speakers include Marcus Bourget, Jonathan Welsh, from the Choir of Hard Knox and of course, Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore.

The launch will be simultaneously high tech and environmentally conscious. There will be computer stations set up around the place to record people’s memories of Mardi Gras – the best of these will be played during the Parade. There will also be $5,000 donated to Centennial Parklands Foundation so they can buy shrubs and trees to offset carbon emissions from the Parade.

There’s a contingency plan if the weather gets a little moist too – so don’t despair. Come one, come all to Moore Park this Saturday from 4pm and get ready to paint Sydney a much needed shade of pink.
