Channel Seven Uncharitable?
The folk at Brekkie Central might present a warm fuzzy image to Sunrise viewers, but Channel Seven is copping a lot of flack for allegedly demanding $130,000 from a charity to cover their production costs. The Seven Network has since withdrawn from the fundraising walk on the Great Wall of China because of the lack of funds.
The fundraiser which features celebrities and international stars trekking 228km over 21 days in Beijing is all about raising money for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre Appeal. A pretty great cause, right? Sunrise was offered exclusive coverage of the event in Australia but reneged on the deal because the charity did not meet production costs.
Denying the allegations of their supposed demands, the Seven Network admitted that they couldn’t meet the costs needed and stated that the withdrawal was based on their lack of sponsorship.
“At Seven, we have done everything we possibly could to support the cause,” said Seven Corporate Affair Manager Simon Francis. “We’ve backed this from the start. We’re still backing it, but the spin on this, about Sunrise’s refusal and demands, is offensive.”
Peter Court, Executive Member of the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre Appeal, backed up the network’s claim that $130,000 was not demanded. According to him, the event had “outgrown” Sunrise and decided that other media should be involved, terminating the program’s exclusivity of the coverage.
“We are extremely pleased with the media support and the media flexibility that we now have to generate publicity.”
