Australian Idol Heads To London
Aussie celebrity Tina Arena and former Savage Garden member Darren Hayes have signed up to be the guest judges of Australian Idol during the London auditions for the show’s upcoming season. The two stars will join original judge Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson to find exceptional new Aussie ex-pat talent.
The Idol auditions were originally scheduled for two international stops, including London and Los Angeles, but the auditions in LA were canned after judge Kyle Sandilands pulled out due to schedule conflicts. The London auditions, however, will go on.
“As an Australian entertainer living in London I definitely have a soft spot for Aussies trying to make it overseas,” said Hayes.
Arena, on the other hand, was given flack for her early comments on the exploitation of talent on reality television, citing her presence as a judge is only to boost her waning celebrity status.
“I’m tired of being constantly insulted by what I see on TV and people thinking they’re going to genuinely be stars when they are exploited financially, visually,” Arena said.
She still stood by her remarks, however, stating that she wouldn’t follow the Idol track had she been a young, unknown talent. Arena believed in “growing through hard work” which she wants to convey to the contestants as a judge during the London auditions. Nice save Tina!
The Network Ten talent quest will begin on April 19 in London.
