Gay TV Channel For Foxtel
The race is on. Aussie cable TV giant Foxtel plan on launching three new channels to rival the free-to-air networks’ planned launch of Freeview. According to some sources, one of the three pay TV channels might include a gay network which could start as early as next year.
All the free to air networks – Seven, Nine and Ten, their regional affiliates and public broadcasters ABC and SBS will be working together to promote their new digital Freeview channels. For the average Joe who has a Freeview compatible TV, it means an additional ten channels.
When Freeview took off in the UK it included 40 channels and the content on those was remarkably similar to what was on pay TV, which annoyed many subscribers. That won’t be the case when it launches here though – so those of you who have Foxtel can keep the smiles on your dials.
Foxtel also plan to launch high-definition digital video recorders and channels by June, including BBC HD and Discovery Channel-National Geographic HD. A Foxtel source told The Australian, “We will be launching more new channels than they are launching in total.”
There’s not a lot of information out in the public domain as yet about this gay channel. If it does actually happen it would be an exciting step forward for Australia, who up until now has had to settle for the occasional gay character or storyline, or community access TV.
