Elton Honours The Luncheon Club

Elton John’s Monday night concert in Sydney was an evening of thanks. Whilst Elton was being congratulated for his 41st show at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, Time Out Sydney magazine and Sir Elton were doing a little thanks of their own.

Time Out’s Gay & Lesbian Editor Andrew Georgiou, joined Sir Elton in awarding Carole Ann King and the volunteers from The Luncheon Club a certificate of recognition for their tireless work in the area of HIV/AIDS.

“We were lucky enough to have Elton as our guest editor for a week during his visit last year,” says Georgiou. “Elton became aware of Luncheon Club after we ran a feature on both Sir Elton’s charity and Luncheon Club last year. We got it touch with him and organised the joint award to honour a woman we respect and admire.”

Moments before he was due onstage, Elton asked Ms King, Lance Day and Georgiou to hang in his private dressing room where he enquired about the Luncheon Club and thanked Carole Ann for her work. “He was incredibly gracious and his thanks to Carole Anne was really heart felt.” Georgiou says. “It was an honour for us to join him in thanking her.”

Carole Ann King, thrilled to bits, said “I didn’t know if I should use Sir or not but when he walked in, he treated us all like old friends. There were hugs all round and he was so very genuine, it was a thrill for Lance, myself and all of us at Luncheon Club.”

Elton made no bones about his respect for Ms King either.
“It’s people like you who put in all the ground work. Without you we don’t have charities.”

Last Friday’s Luncheon Club fundraiser at Arq raised almost $4000 for the charity, which is great news. It’s no secret that charities like Luncheon Club need all our support to continue the amazing work they do. Twice a week they provide lunches as well as a grocery larder to people living with HIV/AIDS, so be sure to help out with donations whenever you see Luncheon Club volunteers collecting out and about.
