Sex And The Piracy

The day has finally arrived! Sex And The City – The Movie hits Australian screens today and no doubt fans are moist at the prospect.

Although the film has brought little joy to a couple of video stores in Sydney’s south-western suburbs. During a raid yesterday detectives uncovered a bunch of pirated DVD copies of the film, as well as DVD copying and production equipment. They also found copies of the new Indiana Jones flick for sale too.

Between the two stores authorities found 7500 films and 69 DVD burners. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the pirated products had a value of about $75,000. A man and woman in their thirties and a man in his fifties have been arrested.

A spokesperson from the Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft told the Herald that while it may look like a victimless crime, it was far from it.

He added that “People need to realise piracy is a crime and has consequences,” those being a $60,500 fine per offence and the possibility of five years in prison.

Sex And The City opens nationally in cinemas today.
