BGF Bake Off This Sunday

My mother would never let me in the kitchen. She always said “you’ll make too much mess!” Needless to say, at almost thirty I think I’ve cooked three things in my entire life that I was proud of. One of them was a cake for last year’s Bobby Goldsmith Bake Off.

Unfortunately my friends and I ate it that same night in a drunken frenzy of pride, so it didn’t make it to the actual event. This year, to make sure that doesn’t happen again, I’ve decided to enter the non-edible category.

If you’ve ever considered entering the Bake Off but haven’t as yet, make this year your year. I went to my first Bake Off in 2007 just to take a look and I gotta tell you, it warmed the cockles of my heart. It is such a true community event. First there are the people who stay up late the night before baking cakes of all shapes and sizes – some are absolute works of art, some are mediocre and some are… let’s just use the word ‘brave’. Then there are those who flash their cash around, bidding sometimes ridiculous amounts for these baked goods, knowing that it’s all about the charity at the end of the day.

It’s a gorgeous example of giving, of a community looking after one another, while doing it with humour and love.

The Bake Off is the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation’s longest running community event, this year it celebrates 21 fabulous years. The action kicks off at The Midnight Shift, Darlinghurst, starting 12pm sharp.

Budding bakers and connoisseur chefs from the community are invited to enter their wildest culinary creations into one of eight categories, including Best Cake, Best Cake (Professional), Best Tart, Best Smallgoods (Biscuits and Scones), Best Decorated Cake, Best Preserves (Jams and Pickles), Best Non-Edible Cake and Best Kitchen & Table Craft.

During the judging, guests will be entertained by some of Sydney’s most famous drag queens, Priscilla Showgirls and a few fresh-faced talents, while sipping on the legendary Dot Dingle’s infamous mandarin, chilli, mars bar and redskin flavoured cocktails.

The event culminates with a live auction at 4pm, hosted by MC and auctioneer extraordinaire Mitzi Macintosh, which sees each entry auctioned off with a complimentary prize donated by community supporters; from travel and accommodation packages, photography sessions, exquisite furniture and much more.

The cut off for entries is today – 5pm, Friday June 15. So if you haven’t put your form in yet, there’s still time! Click here.

Pop this in your diaries folks – 12pm, Sunday 15 June 2008. Midnight Shift Hotel, 85 Oxford Street, Darlinghurst.

See you there. And for those of you who can’t make it on the day, you’ll still be able to vote for your favourite cake here at Same Same on Monday. We’ve got two Sony Ericsson Bluetooth Watches to give away to those who enter too.

Happy baking!
