Witness An Abomination Tonight
Freedom2b(e) are a networking group of GLBTIQ people from pentecostal and charismatic Christian backgrounds. Tonight they’re screening a documentary called Abomination: Homosexuality And The Ex-Gay Movement and you’re all invited!
Abomination is a documentary focusing on sexual orientation conversion therapies, sometimes called “reparative therapy.” Conversion therapies have been criticised by mainstream mental health professionals for the harm they cause and for their practitioners’ overstated claims of success. Nevertheless, these “treatments” are increasingly being promoted by conservative faith communities across the America. Abomination is a sobering counterpoint to the false hopes being marketed by the ex-gay movement.
Abomination: Homosexuality And The Ex-Gay Movement profiles the journeys of four gay Christians who did everything possible to become heterosexual including the treatment protocols of the so-called ex-gay ministries. At times heartbreaking, at other times hilarious, the approaches taken by the Church range from shock therapy and hypnosis to gender coaching and sham marriages. Ultimately the therapy fails, even for the ministers in charge as they repeatedly scandalize themselves by “relapsing into gayness.”
Abomination features a number of national mental health experts who have studied and written about the ex-gay movement’s treatment failures, including prominent psychiatrist, Robert Spitzer, MD, who cuts through the media sensationalism and explains what his controversial research on reparative therapy actually means. Despite the pain chronicled in this groundbreaking film, Abomination is a poignant testament to human resilience and to the sometimes difficult journey to self-acceptance.
