Melbourne Mardi Gras Group Announces Final March
When the sexy Melbourne Mardi Gras Group (MMGG) marches at Mardi Gras in 2009, it will be for the last time. Danni Crowe (pic 2), key organizer of popular queer Victorian marching group made the shock announcement this Wednesday 2nd July. According to Crowe, the decision was a very difficult one to make and only came after a lot of thought and sleepless nights. Crowe sites a combination of a new important job opportunity combined with increased family responsibility as the reason that she is bowing out, and subsequently calling an end to the group.
“Organising groups like MMGG take up a lot of personal energy… in fact much more than most people realize”, Ms Crowe explained, “I love this group with all my heart, and all that we have achieved. I’ve had some changes recently within my work and family life. But with life and family, you only really get one shot. I just want to make sure I don’t miss what is important and deserves my attention”
“Everyone has been wonderful and supportive” Ms Crowe went on to say, “offering to lend a bigger hand in future years. I really appreciate that, but I know that at least for the time being, I need to take the time out.”
In the meantime, Ms Crowe says that all our energy of the group is going into making their final march in 2009 the biggest and best yet! MMGG have set aside a few dates to keep the fun, excitement and adrenalin pumping for the coming 8 months leading up to the parade. Coming up first is their Xmas in July fundraising party which happens this weekend, which may include a special visit from Fox FM’s Hamish and Andy who are currently organizing a a week long party tour.
October 2008 will see the group hold introductory meetings for new members, and registration to the group. Then look out for the public dress rehearsal on the 1st March 2009.
Finally, the group will celebrate it’s achievements and say goodbye in a Fabulosity Party in Sydney on March 8th 2009, after their final march.
MMGG isn’t the only group to undergo changes. While 2009 won’t be the final march for Victoria’s longest running marching group Vic Precence, their President of the past three years, Ian Flemming (pic 3) resigned this year, quoting reasons very similar to Ms Crowe. Flemming has been attributed with the much increased profile of Vic Presence which has seen the group receive extensive media coverage and win awards during his time. A new board will be elected for the group this month.
