It's Time To Go... Big Brother

Well, it would seem that Gretel got out at exactly the right moment! Despite saying earlier this month that Big Brother would return next year, Channel Ten have since announced that this season of the reality show is definitely going to be the last. When the curtain falls next Monday, it will be for the final time.

When the series began eight years ago it was fresh and controversial. The housemates bonded well and as they got to know each other, so did we. Eviction shows were emotional events. It pushed boundaries with its up late time slot. It was, at times, a real exploration of humanity under pressure.

Not only has the show since buckled under pressure from conservatives, it’s also sold out in so many other ways. This year we had no gay housemates. This year the show relied heavily on celebrity cameos, gimmicks and cruelty. The series is no longer a reflection of the times we live in, it’s lost its heart.

According to News.com.au, Channel Ten pays about $30 million annually for the rights to the show, and while the series continues to flourish in other overseas countries, it seems that Australians just aren’t capable, or brave enough, to find the right people to stick in the house.

Channel Ten now needs to find another program to fill the 120 hour hole in their 2009 programming.

More re-runs of The Simpsons anyone?
