“Homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered. Homosexual acts go against the natural moral law. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.”

These hateful words were written by Joseph Ratzinger, a Vatican Cardinal in 2003. Some 30 years before, the same author wrote a damning report called “Declaration on Certain Questions Concerning Sexual Ethics” in which he stated that the inclination toward homosexuality is “tendency toward an intrinsic moral evil, and thus the inclination itself must be seen as an objective disorder.”

In 2008, this man is now known as Pope Benedict XVI, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church who arrived on Australian soil this week to spread his message of intolerance to half a million pilgrims in Sydney for World Youth Day.

We want to send a clear message that it is OK to be gay. Join SameSame.com.au’s black campaign.

Simply wear black clothing when heading out this weekend in solidarity for the gay, lesbian and transgender people around the world who have suffered at the hands of the Church.

Let’s unite to send an important message to the Pope.

Yours in blackness,

I read this article today and thought I would share with my colleagues at work who are talking up the Pope and WYD 08 to try and bring balance to my negativity when asked to join the discussion.
This is what I sent inlcuding an excerpt from the article this morning:
This is the why behind how I feel about the Pope visit and WYD 08 and my negativity towards any celebrations of his arrival.
An excerpt from an article posted on samesame.com.au of which I am a contributor.
And this was my managers response, from a great catholic lady with a broader understanding than most:

It's a source of great shame that the church of which I am a member continues to formalise awful teachings that marginalise and exclude gays, women, abused children ... it is hateful stuff. And one of the reasons many of us are paying more attention to the Pope's shoes than to what he and the other grey old men of the church have to say.

But why be in a church like that -- the Rainbow Sash group says:

Just like Lesbian or Gay couples holding hands in public to raise the threshold of social acceptance, we must be visible in the churches so they can see us, experience and know us. We want to challenge the churches; to rethink their outmoded views about sex and sexuality. Do we give up or stand for our rights?

The churches have considerable resources, power and influence in our society. Do we leave and hand this over to the narrow minded or stand up for our rights? We are reminded of George Pell, archbishop of Melbourne who is attempting to turn the Australian Catholic Church back to the past. Present church views often provide a justification for homophobia and discrimination in our society.

.... what happens if people of good will remain silent.
