Gay Rugby Doco On Tuesday Night
Just a reminder folks that tomorrow night (Tuesday) at 7.30pm SBS will be screening the documentary Walk Like A Man. The film follows players from two of the world’s best rugby teams – San Francisco Fog and the Sydney Convicts – as they get ready to play for the 2006 Bingham Cup in New York City.
The 2006 comp was the first year the Sydney Convicts won the competition. This year in Ireland, they won it again.
This inspirational documentary, narrated by gay rugby player Ian Roberts, not only shows what we can do when we set our mind to something, it also challenges stereotypes about gay men and sport, it presents alternative ideas about support and community and it examines some really deep, personal issues through close examination of some of the players, from sexual abuse through to religion.
The story behind the Bingham Cup competition is a moving one as well. Mark Bingham was a passenger who stormed the cockpit of Flight 93, on September 11, 2001, stopping it from being used as a terrorist weapon. The plane crashed in a field just outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania, about 240 km northwest of Washington, D.C., killing all 44 people aboard, including the hijackers.
In 2002 the Bingham Cup was launched to honour his memory.
