Gay Is The New Black
It’s felt like the longest ‘day’ ever, but finally World Youth Day is over. After Sunday’s Papal Mass at Randwick Racecourse, which was attended by over 350,000 people, the Pope has hopped on a Vatican bound flight and many pilgrims are starting to make their way home.
Over the weekend thousands of people from Sydney to San Francisco got behind Same Same’s Black Campaign. On Saturday, as the pilgrims snaked their way through Sydney’s streets, so did over a thousand activists, meeting them along the marching route at Anzac Parade and Moore Park Road, where they handed out condoms.
Some protesters wore costumes, others donned t-shirts bearing anti-relgious and pro-contraceptive messages. There were plenty of people carrying placards as well saying things like “Pope Wanted For Murder”, “I Do Not Exist” and “Pope Go Homo”.
During the clash between pilgrims and protesters, which was mostly peaceful, one pilgrim from Newcastle physically leapt on a gay protester, punching him in the neck. He was arrested, but later released without charge.
