Gay Retirement Village For Victoria
Plans for a $26 million gay, lesbian and transgender retirement village have just been approved for Victoria. It’s an exciting move forward for Australia, and will be one of only a few such developments in the world.
The village, to be called Linton Estate, will be located in Ballan, in Moorabool Shire, between Bacchus Marsh and Ballarat. It will feature 120 two and three bedroom units and top of the line facilities, including a tennis court, a bowling green, an open air theatre, a pool, a spa, a gym, a cafe, a restaurant and a business centre. Despite complaints from the locals, construction will start early 2009.
All too often when gay people go into regular aged care homes, they become invisible. Some are split from their partners, some retreat back into the closet, unable to relate to those around them. Some feel alienated when other residents have children and grandchildren visiting. Having to explain and justify your differences to others can be tiring and often, too exhausting. The like-minded support network that many gay people of this generation create around them is suddenly gone, which can add to the trauma of growing old.
This centre aims to stop all that.
As Managing Director and major shareholder Peter Dickson told Sunday Herald Sun, “Whether we’re in a relationship or whether we’re single, we want to be surrounded by friends.”
