New Look Launch For Mardi Gras
Change is afoot at Mardi Gras, as the organisation moves into what new Chair David Imrie is calling “the next generation”. Next year, for the first time in Mardi Gras’ history, season launch will be incorporated into Fair Day.
“Yes, launch will be at Fair Day next year, on February 15,” says David Imrie, New Mardi Gras Chair. “I’ve often wondered ‘why don’t we run launch at Fair Day?’ and people have often asked about it too. So we’ve actually moved Fair Day to a week earlier and that will be season launch.”
Imrie says that the Fair Day Working Group is going up to Kangaroo Valley this weekend to have a think tank about next year’s event. “One of the key things they’ll be discussing is how Mardi Gras can run a fantastic launch as part of Fair Day.”
It seems to be a very sensible decision, given the difficulties the organisation has faced in recent years when it comes to running a Launch. This year rain at the last minute meant that the event was moved to a venue that was too small to accommodate everybody. And changes to hire agreements at the Sydney Opera House mean their steps are no longer a viable option.
“Fair Day is open, it’s for the whole community. That’s what launch should be. I don’t think it should be an expensive, ticketed event. I think as many people as possible should be able to come to launch with their family and their friends and their neighbours and have a really good time. To me, that’s what Fair Day and Launch are all about.”
