"He Picked The Wrong Girl"
A night out at a lesbian bar in Sydney last year turned into a nightmare for Jessica Loiterton after she was raped by the taxi driver who drove her home.
Loiterton [right in the Daily Telegraph], then 18, spent a night out at the Flinders Hotel in Darlinghurst last November. There was lots of alcohol consumed, and by the time she hailed a cab at 12:30am, she found it hard to stay awake in the long drive home to Oyster Bay.
Yesterday the 22 year-old taxi driver who picked her up, Md Kowsar Ali, was charged with raping her. The jury of nine men and three women, who were not told of Jessica’s sexual history, took two hours and 10 minutes to convict him.
Judge Peter Berman yesterday lifted an order suppressing her identity after Loiterton gave her permission. “She should not be forced to hide away embarrassed as to what happened to her. She is entitled to hold her head up high and identify herself as a blameless victim of a sexual assault,” he said.
“It is a relief off my shoulders that this won’t happen again to anyone,” said Loiterton after the verdict, the holds a maximum jail term of 14 years with a minimum non-parole period of seven years.
It’s a brave move for Loiterton to face the public, after giving evidence against him this week. “He thought he could get away with it,” she told The Daily Telegraph. “He definitely picked the wrong girl.”
