Presets, Cilmi Dominate ARIAs

In spite of some stiff competition from teenage popstar newcomer Gabriella Cilmi, the 2008 ARIA Awards were good to men-about-town The Presets. The Sydney duo took home several of the evening’s most prestigious awards, including ‘Best Group’, ‘Best Dance Release’ and ‘Album of the Year’.

Check out our hot photos from the 2008 ARIA Red Carpet.

Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes were also responsible for the ceremony’s most electric performance with a typically high-energy rendition of their anthem My People, complete with over-the-top theatrics, a handful of mysterious Zebra dancers and a whole lotta lasers. It wasn’t all neon sunshine though – The Presets lost out to Gabriella Cilmi with the ‘Best Single Of The Year’ award, with the 17 year old Melbourne lass going on to collect all six awards she was nominated for.

There was a hot performance from Sam Sparro, who belted out his smash hit Black And Gold, and at one point almost tripped over on a flight of steps as he ran about the stage. The Veronicas got the crowd going with a hot rendition of Untouched. And P!nk was in good form, making a memorable entrance on a ride on lawn mower to perform her latest hit So What?

Chris Lilley’s Naughty Girl took home the award for Best Original Soundtrack, Delta’s self-titled album won Highest Selling Album and Nick Cave won Best Male Artist.

Presets are genuinely fun and nice guys.

Was funny when Sparro almost tripped.

OMG how trashed was Pink when she was presenting with rove and how stupid was that Gabriella girl, honestly for those playing a drinking game at home "Cool".

Sidebar- I want the My pet monster hat Julian was wearing, loved the tribute to George Clinton, Mickey Mouse and Tim Burton.

Also lets all chip in for Nick Cave to get a haircut, the man is a god but his hair is gone and he needs to get over it.

yeah all respect to the 17yo girl, but really she isn't worth that much hype

do people actually like pink? alot of money was spent to make her set look dangerous, but so fake

Loved Pink, Loved The Presets.... Gabriella did not deserve 6 Aria's as her music is average. I don't know why every year somebody has to scoop the pool. It all reminds me of Idol way too much. Nick Cave = legend and yes Nick shave your fucking hair.. it's looking creepy now.

Agree, was pissed off that Gabriella sounded like she couldn't give a shit. Just because an artist is succesful overseas doen't mean it deserves ARIAs.

Pissed off also Cut Copy, Sam Sparro, Kylie and Nick Cave were overlooked.

However, on the other hand was pleased Operator Please, Faker (their performance was horrendous as always) and the Potbelleez got absolutely nothing and their careers can now be thrown on the scrapheap!

Honestly I love the glitz and the concept behind the Aria's but every year somebody cleans up like there needs to be some huge sweep each year. I don't really think that represents the Aussie music industry. Not everybody can win but when 1 person is cleaning up with such an average recording it's infuriating. Since Idol began each year I tend to get closer to lumping Idol and the Aria's in the same basket. As they are hosted by the same people and do anything to plug their new idols each year it's pathetic.

I'll go back to humming now.... "la la la nothing sweet about that song la la la"

Nick Cave got a pretty high award. Sam Sparro only seems to have the one song that people care about. Kylie probably needs to hang out in Australia more if she wants awards.

What are you on about? The industry has gotten worse, poor little Shane Nicholson had to cut an album with Casey chambers just to get an award. Do you have any idea what it would have been like to be stuck in a recording studio forced to listen to that voice for months. If he didn't do that he'd still be stuck in Genre limbo.

Also why the hell do indigenous artists get "best world music" this is Australia, and they are Australian are they not?

The ARIA's are a massive joke publicity stunt that has been co-opted by channel 10, eventually they are going to have an award for the person that actually recorded an album(OMFG) the way the industry and accreditation is going. Dave Mcormack was right "Music is crap- Aliens told us so".

i agree.. ARIA's are crap

can't believe that Gabriella Cilmi got even 1.. sheesh..

good to see Nick Cave FINALLY getting some mainstream recognition.. he's only been making music in the industry for what??? 30 years??

Glad presets got something, wished sparro had at least got 1 and glad Cut Copy didn't get anything because they are as boring as bat shit..

oh and for those not in the know..

ARIA charts are ranked on cd's distributed ( as well as tracks online ) .. not ACTUAL cd's sold to customers..

I hadn't heard any of the songs on the show before last night but i watched it anyway for the humor factor. It was funny. Drunken 17 year olds for the win.

That Gabrielle chick had the most catchy song BY FAR, her and Living End, so it's no surprise to me she won. All those bullshit "indie" Australian artists who can't write a hook to save their lives can get fucked. It's not the community radio wank awards, it's the ARIAs.

I found it hilarious that The Presets won. I remember seeing them a few years ago when they were marketed as a nerdy electroclash band. Now they've gone all fluoro they're rave superstars?! When did that happen?

Herpes is catchy too..

and yet the presets thanked all the COMMUNITY RADIO stations in their acceptance speeches, saying they were eternally grateful to them..
