Avenue Q Finally Coming To Australia!
The wait is almost over folks. Finally the Broadway and West End sensation Avenue Q is coming to Australia, and it’s kicking off its season in Australia’s cultural capital – Melbourne. The Australian premiere will be at the Comedy Theatre on June 4 2009.
Those of you around the country fear not – the show will be touring shortly after, with Sydney, Canberra, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane all getting seasons.
Avenue Q has been described as Sesame Street meets South Park, with cute puppets singing irreverent songs like Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist, The Internet Is For Porn and If You Were Gay.
“I’ve been waiting and waiting and waiting for Avenue Q to finally get to Australia,” says creator Robert Lopez. “Not just because I’ve never been and I’ve always wanted to die in a Great White shark attack, but because I’ve always suspected that Aussies would really love Avenue Q!”
Writer, Jeff Marx says, “I am really excited to see Avenue Q opening in Australia. I am sure that the famous Australian sense of humour will be a perfect match for our irreverent show.”
Avenue Q is not the most upmarket of New York streets, and is about as far away from Park Avenue as you can get, but it is home to some lively and off the wall characters performed by an unholy comedic alliance of humans and puppets. Life may suck on Avenue Q but being jobless, homeless, politically incorrect, having sex (whether
hetero, homo or porno…and that’s just the puppets) are just some of the topics featured in the terrific songs of this show.
The Australian production of Avenue Q will be directed by Jonathan Biggins, well known for his television work on ABC, and for being part of Sydney Theatre Company’s Wharf Revue team.
