Order Of Australia For Matthew Mitcham

Matthew Mitcham was one of 536 Australians to be honoured with an Order Of Australia medal this year. This year 167 women and 369 men were recognised for their outstanding achievement in the arts, education, business, law, sport and community work.

Other recipients of the accolade from the Council for the Order Of Australia include singer Marcia Hines, swimmer Stephanie Rice, actor and founder of the Bell Shakespeare Company, John Bell, retired veteran newsreader Brian Henderson, artist and ex-wife of the late Brett Whitely, Wendy Whiteley and former Labor leader Kim Beazley.

Mitcham also set a personal best in the men’s open platform on the weekend, and according to the City South News he is currently working on a complicated back somersault that sharpens his technique and increases his points-scoring potential. He’s competing in the Rome World Championships later this year.

Matthew Mitcham received the Medal of the Order of Australia 'for service to sport as a Gold Medallist at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games'. Christian - just a wee correction the Honours are awarded by Council for the Order of Australia (www.itsanhonour.gov.au) not the Australia Day Council which organises Australia Day. I only found out cos I was googling to see why Matthew got his medal!

PS did you enjoy Chunky? I had a GREAT time, but it was just so hot in the main room! Still good to see Manacle so busy. Hopefully there will be more Chunky's in future!

In 2009, I believe we should give every award, to people who jump off long planks of wood. Even the Gold Logie.
