Big Gay Day 2009 went off without a hitch, seeing a huge crowd through the gates. On the whole the masses were very well behaved, with only a little bit of shoving going on in the bottle necked pathways later in the afternoon. Some arrived early to brave the heat, but as the afternoon cooled down the crowds surged, the entrance queue extending a long way down the street.

Highlights of the day were the Mr Q. Awards, (with a very hot number 6 unfortunately robbed of a prize!), Operator Please getting the crowd jumping with their great stage presence and Crystal Waters giving a high energy performance. DJ Jimmy Dee also got the dance floor pumped, with spectacular visuals on a screen behind him, warming up the crowd for the outrageous Mega Drag featuring both drag kings and queens – some of them were even singing!

Inside the Wickham was pumping, with a large crowd of people dancing to DJ’s throughout the day. The Double Up Bears drew a particularly large crowd of hot, sweaty men, getting sexy on the dance floor.

The event has raised a record $40,206 for LGBT charities this year, beating the last year’s record by more than $5000!

Charities in line to receive the money are GLWA ( The Gay and Lesbian Welfare Association ) , QHAC, Open Doors, Toowoomba Young Womens Place and ATSAQ (The Australian Transgender Support Association). Three of the charities will be using the money in youth related projects.

In reply gaynproud, but first a question..............did you attend the event in 2007 at Mudgeeraba ?
Gold Coast Gay Day (as the event is named), returned in 2007 after an absence of 2 yrs, with new organisers, a new venue and a new direction into the future. It was transformed into an All Ages FAIR DAY styled festival providing the LGBT communities, their family & friends an opportunity to come together & celebrate.
Mudgeeraba was chosen as the facilities were best suited to this kind of event. Over 1000 people turned out to celebrate & support.
The committee this year (of which there are 3 new members) plus several sub-committee members, did consider returning the event to Surfers, but the venue suggested, was not a viable option, based on discussions with police & community leaders, and Mudgeeraba presented as the best option, and judging on feedback from the community, a good choice has been made.
We have a strong, united, POSITIVE, committee, dedicated to the success of this event, also the support offered by volunteers, has been overwhelming.
We have firm support from sectors of the media who are looking ahead to the future of the Gold Coast Gay Day & can envisage the opportunities for growth that we see.
Perhaps the "bias" you see is generated by our combined, genuine passion to present the VERY BEST EVENT we can for the LGBT communities of the Gold Coast., despite our inexperience.
We welcome constructive criticism & are always open to suggestions from any member of the community, in ways to improve the event.
Its impossible to please everyone, human nature being what it is, but we are getting together and trying our very best ! We are having a go !
