Queer Prom For Youth Week
As part of 2009 National Youth Week, which runs from 28 March to 5 April, Twenty10 are putting on a Queer Prom for people under 26.
Rebecca Reynolds, Managing Director of Twenty10, says that while they’ve run the Queer Prom before, this year it’s very much being driven by the young people who access Twenty10, so it has a fresh perspective.
“It’s all about these young people finding some time and a place where they can be exactly who they want to be for a night. It’s also about breaking away from the mainstream ideas and limitations around a high school prom.”
The theme this year is Good And Evil, an idea that Reynolds says came from the young people themselves.
“Sometimes things seen as ‘good’ can be really evil and vice versa, so this theme gives folks the chance to interpret the night however they want to.”
She added that because the theme isn’t necessarily queer-centric, it provides scope for other issues to be addressed too.
Queer Prom – Good And Evil is on Friday April 3, from 6 – 10pm at Aurora Room, Twenty10, 45 Bedford St, Newtown. It’s free but no pass-outs after 9pm. The event is drug and alcohol free and only people under 26 will be permitted entry. For more information head to Twenty10’s website.
