Gay Journalist Released

Released this morning, serving just over half of his goal sentence, former-ABC correspondent Peter Lloyd is leaving Singapore’s Changi Prison.

Arrested in July last year for possession of methamphetamine, or ‘ice’, Lloyd was originally facing more serious charges of trafficking and supply of drugs which were later dropped. Initially, it was thought Lloyd might be goaled for 20 years, but was sentenced to 10 months in December. Lloyd is thought to have been released this morning.

Reports indicate Lloyd’s early release is due to him being a ‘model’ prisoner, attending counseling sessions and other activities at the prison, reports the Brisbane Times.

In the lead up to Lloyd’s arrest, the then ABC correspondent had been flown to Singapore for hospitalisation due to an eye infection. The 42-year old had also recently separated from his Australian wife, with whom he has two children, and come out as gay.

Lloyd is reportedly keen to be reunited with his ex-wife and children, especially his nine-year old son who is seriously ill.

In the lead up to Lloyd’s trial the ABC supported the senior journalist with counseling and legal aid, following his conviction the broadcaster was forced to dismiss him.
