Gay Patient Molested By Doctor?
A 58 year old Brisbane doctor, who was once the head doctor of a South African AIDS treatment centre, has denied claims that he molested a gay patient at his Brisbane clinic.
According to The Australian, the doctor, whose name has been suppressed, was arrested last week after a 22-year-old patient filed a police report about being inappropriately touched during a physical examination by the doctor.
The doctor has been charged with one count of sexual assault. He appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court and was granted bail on the condition that he have no contact with the patient.
The court heard that the patient visited the doctor because he was experiencing “significant weight loss, constant diarrhoea and lack of energy”. When the doctor was told that the patient was gay and practiced unsafe sex the doctor ordered a number of tests, including one for HIV, and asked him for specifics about his sexual behaviour.
On subsequent visits to the clinic the patient alleged that the doctor physically examined his genitals, pulling down the patient’s pants without warning, stroking his penis, rubbing the patient’s chest and buttocks.
The doctor’s defence lawyer said that given his client’s experience working with HIV in Africa, he had serious concerns about the patient’s health. He told the court that the allegations were “all untrue’’ and that he was carrying out tests that he felt were appropriate.
The matter is due before the courts again in August.
