Kyle Sandilands Suspended Again
2Day FM has suspended Kyle Sandilands again following comments he made during The Kyle and Jackie O Show today. While discussing the recent weight loss of actress and comedian Magda Szubanski, he added that she had more weight to lose and that by going into a concentration camp she could become ‘skinny’.
Sandilands’ comments come remarkably soon after him being re-instated at 2Day FM following an incident involving rigging a 14-year-old girl to a lie detector and asking about her sex life. When she claimed live on air that she’d been raped at the age of 12, Kyle responded with, “So is that the only sexual experience you’ve had?”
The incident sparked outrage and some major sponsors withdrew their advertising from the Austereo group.
Szubanski, who has been the recent face of Jenny Craig, lost 25kg. Sandilands, who is hardly svelte himself, said that she had more weight to lose and that her work with Jenny Craig wasn’t done.
“Magda could have another run out of it,’’ said Sandilands. “She could get another season out of them, easy … she’s not skinny.’’
When Jackie O said that she may not be able to lose more weight because of her build, Sandilands said: “That’s what all fat people say… You put her in a concentration camp and you watch the weight fall, like she could be skinny.”
Szubanski told the Daily Telegraph, “I couldn’t give two hoots about what Kyle says about me, but to trivialise what happened to people in concentration camps is abhorrent.”
Australian/Israel and Jewish Affairs Council spokesman Jeremy Jones told the Herald Sun, “Why would you want to have anything to do with somebody like this? To joke about the experience of people who are being starved to death or murdered… is quite horrendous. There are people who confuse freedom of speech with gratuitous, insulting, offensive behaviour. They’re two quite different things.”
Sandilands said that he didn’t mean to offend Magda or anyone else with the comments.
According to a statement released today by 2Day FM the suspension will be in effect pending further discussions involving Kyle Sandilands and station management.
“2Day FM believes the comments made by Kyle were unacceptable and sincerely apologises and regrets any offence they caused.”
