Happy Birthday Perth Pride
Almost twenty years ago on October 22, 1989 a small group of people held a rally on the steps of Parliament House, this pivotal event lead to the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Western Australia. This event lead to the creation of Perth Pride, who are now celebrating twenty years of serving Perth’s gay community.
Last Friday night saw the official opening of the month-long festival. The event was officially opened by Lord Mayor of Perth, Lisa Scaffidi, and Pride Patron Mark Reid.
2009 will see the largest festival to date, with the return of some old favourite events, including: the Pride Fairday, Parade, and Film Festival – packed with a variety of new queer films, and a selection of camp old favourites that you can catch on the big screen again at the magnificent, art deco Astor Theatre.
The 2009 Perth Pride calendar is jam-packed with theatre events including Les Ballets Trockadero, Gentlemen Prefer Blokes starring Courtney Act, Voix de la Ville – a camp collection of drag kings, queens, cabaret starlets, clowns, burlesque – and many more. Laugh Out Proud, a new event on this calendar this year is a comedy gala featuring the best local and national comedy talent.
Wrapping up the festival is the Pride Parade on October 31. The parade will be lead by a collection of the original activists who staged the rally outside Parliament House, along with the largest number of floats that Perth has ever seen. The parade will be followed by the Homecoming after-party held at Connections Nightclub.
