Police say the body of a man found Saturday morning in Centennial Park could be ‘gay beat’ related, but authorities remain open to other possibilities.

Found by two joggers on Saturday morning, according to police reports the body of a 37-year-old Redfern man was bloodied and laying face-down with his trousers lowered near Busbys Pond, Centennial Park.

Update: Police have named the victim as 37-year-old Anthony Cawsey [pictured at right in SMH]

Detective Inspector Paul Pisanos, of Maroubra police told SMH that police were investigating the possibility of the murder being related to gay beats in the park, “At this stage we’re pursuing all avenues of inquiry, not exclusive to it being a sex-related homicide,” Inspector Pisanos says in a report this morning.

As yet, the cause of Cawsey’s death has not been confirmed, and police are calling for anyone with information or who may have been in the park at the time of the attack to get in touch with police.

“The time frame that we’re looking at at the moment, we’ve narrowed it down to a time frame of between 3am and 6am, 6am being the time that the deceased was found,” Inspector Pisanos told the ABC. “So that three hour window, we’d like to hear from anyone that may have seen anything either surrounding the park or within the park.”

Police also believe that homeless people using the park as a shelter could hold some answers to the attack.

Agree lets hope not but reading the papers his pants were down and they mentioned its a gay beat and that there are homophobic websites which name the places . The downside of the internet I suppose.

Beat sex it a part of many gay mens lives, but parks at night are never going to be a safe place for anything. I really do hope this wasn't sex related.

can i ask; is part of the appeal of beats the risk involved?

anyway, a guy in the US was just (probably) murdered and hung naked from a tree for being a census worker.
sometimes i think humans just want to kill each other, and so then find reasons to.

A good friend of mine knew Tony as well. Got a text about it last night. I'm surprised none of the media reports have mentioned that he wasn't gay. She thinks he'd have been taking a short cut through the park on his way home after work.

If there were active beats in the vicinity he might have been mistaken for a beat user by gay bashers on the prowl. The way the body was left certainly sounds like a homophobe's attempt to humiliate their victim- or perhaps they left him that way as a warning to others.

Hope they get caught soon- too many go unsolved.

Yeah - that's the first thing that my mate said was that he wasn't even gay... yet every report I've heard/read has it reported as a gay hate crime.

Either way it's a frightening and awful way to die.

I hope justice is served.

i've said it before - but squirt.org lists all beats around the world publicly and acts as a blueprint for any homophobe looking for places to go and gaybash. that website makes these once private places totally public and puts people at risk. someone needs to shut that list down.

Agreed it should be shut down, but it doesn't just list parks and beaches and out of the way places- many of the beats it lists are on private property like toilets in office blocks or very public places like bathrooms in busy shopping centres- in both categories only accessible during opening hours while members of the public and co-workers are around and needing to use them.

I commented something like that the other day Christian.

I live near Obelisk Beach and the council here and a couple of others have referred to it and where to go etc and you end up with Police and/or Rangers walking through. Actually they deserve it as there are just enough of them who love to do it publicly ( both gay and straight ) and have been sprung by tourists walking through and in the day of the mobile phone they can ring straight away and report it.

Another friend uses one of the free sites where you can put up an ad and he has shown me ads that say as the headline " Meet up at Obelisk " or quite a few that say
" Meet up Sydney Park , fuck me stupid" etc..................... and these sites are filthy with weirdo's. He gets the odd abusive email from ads he puts in so just imagine how many are reading them and thinking yeah right we'll meet up with you...........

The downside of the internet.

Hope they get caught soon- too many go unsolved. yeah this is pretty hideous. i actually cut through centenial park at night when im in the city and on my way back to coogee. id never encountered any problems and always srugged it off as being safe, but i guess its not. you see people in there jogging all times of the night and morning.

I believe risk may be an appeal for some, but most —driven by their biological urges day and night— are distrustful of meeting via the online process or dont like the expense and slowness of courting at commercial venues.

The last time I took the drug Ecstasy I woke up in Centennial Park cradled in the arms of a lovely man I met in the hazy night before. yeah at night. walking. just stick to the ashphalt walking track on the perimeter beside the road. as i say, there are plenty of joggers and cyclists in there at all sorts of bizzare times conducting their fitness routines. yeah ive never felt unsafe in there

This is basically cross/up selling.. think of it NSWPF agenda of the month.

The fact is, they do not know why this attack happened and there is nil evidence to demonstrate any kind of motivation.

In this case, LAC would be using this unfortunate event as an opportunity to get a message out to the media, about a topic that they are most likely dealing with quite a lot (in this case homophobic based crimes) out to the public.

The fact is so much crime happens all the time, and when it is serious, unusual or news worthy police are on top of it in terms of obviously 1. how they can help 2. how can it be used to prevent it, or similar events to happen again.

I totally agree mate its peels principles of active policing , plus the NSWPF media department will take care of all press and anything the LAC has to say will go through the media department first.
