Bondi Drag Races Are Back
New Mardi Gras has announced the return of the Bondi Beach Drag Races, which will be hosted by Vanessa Wagner as part of the 2010 festival.
The drag races ran between 1995 and 2001 and were one of the most popular events within the original Sydney Fringe Festival. When that Fringe Festival ended the event disappeared from Sydney’s calendar.
The Drag Races will be followed by a boutique dance party at the Bondi Surf Life Saving Club, officially recognised as the oldest life saving club in the world and a true Australian icon.
“The combination of Bondi Beach in summer, faux competitive drag and buckets of sand is an irresistible mix,” said Wagner in a statement. “The frisson of an unsuspecting public and a wacky queer carnival is my idea of nirvana, and really very Australian! It melds fashion with sport to create a very unique free, public and very outdoor event.”
“We have been working on this project for some time,” said NMG Festival Executive Producer Danielle Harvey. “It is an event that people remember with tremendous fondness and I’m confident it will find a whole new audience in 2010.”
