Adelaide Gaol is one of South Australia’s oldest and most intriguing public buildings. It operated from 1841 to 1988 and housed some 300,000 prisoners in its 147 working years, making it one of Australia’s longest continuously operational prison facilities. Not far from the picturesque parklands, looking more like a castle, the Gaol has sweeping city views, contrasted by stark prison cells, barbed wire and stone masonry.
Back in the day, it was also the home of many rave parties and dance style festivities. It also has a history of paranormal activity – during the Gaol’s 147 years of operation, 45 people were executed and the bodies are buried within the grounds, so stories of ghosts and hauntings really come as no surprise.
This year the organisers behind Adelaide’s Sleaze Ball have managed to get their hands on this amazing venue for their annual party.
“Every year we look forward to putting on this most prestigious event for the GLBTIQ and open-minded people of Adelaide. But getting this venue makes this year truly special,” says an organiser and DJ from the event Lauren Neko. “The crew thought not only would it be ideal to revive this amazing venue for a roaring party, but it would be most fitting, given that the theme is ‘Uniform – not to conform!’”
Organisers have secured the best of Adelaide’s talent, and some from interstate as well, and punters can expect DJs, live vocals, dancers, live percussion, food and stalls. The after party kicks on at L!VE on light square from 5am until daylight hits, so get your gear on, this is truly not an event to be missed!
Adelaide Sleaze Ball 2009 is on Saturday November 21 from 10pm til late. It is the official party for the Feast Festival raising money for the AIDS Council Of SA. Tickets start from $50 for early birds. For more information head to their website.
