It's World AIDS Day
1 December is World AIDS Day, a day recognised by millions in more than 190 countries around the world. It’s a day devoted to raising awareness of HIV/AIDS and strengthening support for HIV positive people and those who are affected by AIDS.
In NSW there are a number of events taking place to mark this year’s World AIDS Day. ACON CEO Nicolas Parhkill says a variety of fundraising, awareness-raising and memorial events will feature as part of ACON’s World AIDS Day activities.
“World AIDS Day provides us with our highest profile opportunity of the year to educate people about HIV/AIDS as well as raise money to prevent HIV transmission and help people with HIV,” he says.
“So I encourage everyone to support our efforts this year by making a donation to the Red Ribbon Appeal, buying Red Ribbon merchandise or attending one of our fundraising or remembrance events.”
The Red Ribbon Appeal is one way we can all help raise funds for HIV. Over 250 volunteers will be selling red ribbons ($2) and red wristbands ($4) at selected locations throughout Sydney.
Telstra will also be selling a virtual red ribbon for those who don’t end up running into a volunteer on the streets. Just SMS RED to 13 7663 – all proceeds go to the AIDS Trust.
In Sydney, this Sunday December 6, there will be a World AIDS Day concert at the Seymour Centre. It will also be a tribute to the legendary British singer/songwriter Elton John. The all-star line-up includes Ricki-Lee Coulter, Paul Capsis, Rhys Bobridge, iOTA, Rob Mills and David Harris. All performers will be backed by the 30-piece Sydney International Orchestra. The annual Candlelight AIDS Memorial is held to remember people who have died from an AIDS-related illness. During the hour-long ceremony, the names of people who have been lost to HIV/AIDS will be read out as participants light a candle to remember their loved ones. It will be held on the evening of World AIDS Day at Paddington Town Hall at 8pm.
In Lismore, Northern NSW, the Vigil will be held at the Rotunda, Spinks Park, Lismore, 7:30pm. On Thursday 3 December Bingay will be on at Lismore Workers Club from 6.30pm.
In Melbourne, the World AIDS Day Memorial Ceremony is on Tuesday 1st December, from 5pm at the Positive Living Centre.
In Brisbane, the World AIDS Day Memorial Service will be held from 7pm at the Metropolitan Community Church, Cordelia Street, South Brisbane.
In Cairns there will be a World AIDS Day Candlelight Vigil on Tuesday 1 December from 6pm at The Lagoon, Esplanade.
In Perth there will be a celebration and remembrance at held at the AIDS Memorial in Robertson Park, North Perth from 5.30pm. Hosted by Verity James and with special guest speaker Senator Louise Pratt, Chair of the Federal Parliamentary Liaison Group for HIV/AIDS, BBVs and STIs.
In Canberra there will be an interfaith service held at Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture, 15 Blackall St, Barton. It aims to offer a quiet reflection to remember those who have lost their lives to HIV and commit to the response against the epidemic. It starts at 6pm.
In Canberra there will also be World AIDS Day drinks at Hush Lounge from 6pm, Launceston Street, Phillip. Drinks and a variety of nibbles will be available, and there will be entertainment by members of the Canberra Kings and aerialist Tyler Ayres. Free entry. All money raised will go to the AIDS Action Council and the Trevor Daley Fund.
