Marriage Laws Not Perfect, But They'll Pass
ABC Online reports ACT Greens have chosen to accept Federal Government amendments to same-sex marriage laws in the territory.
The Greens were undecided about accepting the changes and said they would consult the ACT community in the lead up to a vote regarding the amendments.
The new laws have the support of ACT Labor and the territory’s attorney-general, but need the support of the Greens to pass. Sectors of the community say the watered-down version of same-sex marriage laws still places same-sex relationships below that of heterosexual couples.
According to ABC Online, the Greens preferred accepting the Federal Government’s changes to the possibility of having no legal relationship or ceremonial recognition. “We felt we couldn’t risk the progress that has been made,” ACT Greens member Shane Rattenbury told ABC.
The ACT Assembly will vote on the amendments today.
