Matthew Mitcham: Australia's Greatest Athlete?

When the search begins to find Australia’s greatest athlete, eight prominent Australian male sporting greats will go head to head for the title. Amongst them will be openly gay, gold medal winning Olympic diver Matthew Mitcham.

Mitcham will be raising visibility and awareness for Australia’s oldest HIV charity Bobby Goldsmith Foundation (BGF) during the series, as well as pitting his sporting prowess against some of the best.

Other featured athletes include Superv8 driver Craig Lowndes, Rugby Union Rabbitoh James O’Connor, Socceroo Jason Culina, and Rugby League’s hottie Billy Slater.

Over four weeks, each will be tested in 15 challenges including competing in the sporting areas of their opponents as well as personal athletic abilities. The winner will be determined by the athlete that performs the best across all 15 tasks.

On the website for the series, organizers say that their mission is to showcase some of the countries finest sporting talent, that entertain and inspire Australians to get active and healthy.

Australia’s Greatest Athlete runs for four week on Channel 7, beginning this Saturday February 6.

Matthew Mitcham: Australia's Greatest Athlete? no. bless him, but no. Oh I'm glad someone else thinks that ! Not Australia's Greatest Athelete - yet ! Few more games before that can happen. But kudos for him being openly gay. That took guts which others have never admitted to even after they retired.

I know it's for a good cause but I fail to see how a V8 super car driver can be considered an athlete. Is there a name for those who play pseudo sports like car racing, motor X, skate boarding and chess?

Car racing, motocross and skate boarding would all require a fair amount of control over motor skills (excuse the pun) and balance, I'd expect. I used to question why equestrian was an Olympic sport, and was given a similar response. Chess I wouldn't class as a sport, as its competition isn't based on physical attributes.
