After over 10 years in the job as General Manager of the Market Hotel, John Wain has called it a day and officially resigned from his gay nightclub post on Saturday 6th March.
Wain is a much loved and respected part of Melbourne’s queer community with which he has had a long and influential involvement, including managing ALSO’s infamous warehouse parties in the 90’s, and managing the Laird Hotel for a number of years. Wain took up the general manager position at the Market pretty much from the beginning.
“I’ve been doing this for over 30 years now… wow, that’s a bit scary to say out loud isn’t it?... Bars, nightclubs, parties, the gay community… it’s been a part of my life for so long now, and while I’ve loved every second of it, I just feel that I’m really ready for a change. I don’t know what comes next, but I’m looking forward…” Wain told Same Same.
Wain was a key player in setting up the gay-sensitive policies and over all queer friendly energy of the spaces he helped manage. During his time at the Market he was very influential in helping set it’s direction and line-up of performances and DJ sets by some of the big names that have graced it’s stage over the years.
According to Wain, his position at the Market will be absorbed by the very capable existing staff. He says that one of the most enjoyable aspects of his job was working with the great team at the Market.
“The staff at the Market are amazing, just great to work with. No doubt about it, we’ve got a great team here… and Spiro [Condos ] has a lot to do with that. I feel very fortunate to have worked here and played a part in steering the club over the years. I’m definitely leaving on a high professionally.”
Market Hotel owner, Spiro Condos [pictured second with Wain] raves about Wain’c contribution over the years.
“John has been a major part of the success that is the Market Hotel. The whole team deeply appreciates his tireless good work and we look forward to him remaining part of the Market family for years to come” Condos told Same Same.
Wain says that he is looking forward to having a bit of free time to work on renovations to his house, and after a brief break from the scene, to head out for a night out as ‘just a punter’. But one thing is for sure… He doesn’t want anyone making a fuss over him leaving.
“But each day leading to my last [at the Market] has a new value and meaning to me now that I’m officially leaving… I’ve been hesitant about saying anything to anyone, because I really don’t want anyone to make a fuss. I don’t need a big party or a send off. It’s just not my style… though some may disagree. ”
Wain’s last day at as General Manager of the Market will be 21st March 2010.
