2010’s Earth Hour will see cities around the world turning off their lights from 8:30pm this Saturday 27 March to show their support for urgent action against global warming.
Almost 100 iconic landmarks in 1,000 cities and towns around the world – including New York’s Empire State Building, the London Eye, and iconic local buildings the Sydney Opera House and Melbourne’s Luna Park – will switch off their lights.
Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when two million people switched off their lights. In 2008, more than 50 million people around the globe participated. In 2009, participation swelled to hundreds of millions as 4189 cities, towns and municipalities in 88 countries participated.
WWF-Australia hopes millions of people across the country will again do their bit for Earth Hour this Saturday. You can join the movement simply by switching off your lights, and there’s also more information on resolutions you can make to help reduce your carbon footprint on the official Earth Hour website.
Dancing in the dark
Sydney gay venue Nevermind on Oxford Street is getting into the spirit of Earth Hour this Saturday – the venue’s lights will be off all night as music plays for punters on a darkened dancefloor.
“BYO light source this Saturday if you want to see or be seen,” say the Nevermind crew. “We’ll give some torches out on arrival, and you’ll have to use them to navigate your way around the dancefloor as we do our bit to help bring Earth Hour to life.”
The ‘Saturday Fucking Lights Out’ party starts at 10pm at 163 Oxford Street.
