Jesus! Our PM's an atheist
Australia’s new Prime Minister has revealed she does not believe in God, and will not try to court the Christian vote by pretending to have faith.
“I am not going to pretend a faith I don’t feel,” Julia Gillard confirmed in media interviews this morning, reports ABC News.
“For people of faith, I think the greatest compliment I could pay to them is to respect their genuinely held beliefs and not to engage in some pretence about mine,” she added, noting that she grew up in a Christian family, but “I’ve made decisions in my adult life about my own views.”
Gillard did not place her hand on the Bible as she was sworn in as Prime Minister last week. Instead, she chose to take an affirmation.
A Nielsen Poll last year found three-quarters of Australians do not care whether political leaders believe in God or not.
Gays = Sinners?
Meanwhile, NSW Premier Kristina Keneally let slip an anti-gay gaffe in Parliament yesterday as debate about same-sex couples’ adoption rights began.
“Jesus sat with the sinners and the saints,” she told the House, but later backtracked, lending her ‘in principle’ support to the movement towards adoption equality.
“When I see gay and lesbian people giving that unselfish love to a child, that’s something that I – not just as a Christian and a Catholic but as the leader of this state – want to support,” she explained later, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
