Out TV presenter and newly announced ‘Australia’s Most Stylish Celeb’ award winner Ruby Rose is infuriated at our new Prime Minister’s backward stance on the gay marriage issue.

“This morning Julia Gillard said there will be no change to the marriage act as it is only appropriate a man and woman get married,” the fashion-forward star Tweeted yesterday.

“When asked her personal opinion she stated yes, she also believes this and it reflects community views. Listen lady. OK so community views? She has not asked the community for their views – we didn’t even elect her! Australia elected her mate she screwed over.

“I’m just pissed off at the ranga, I expected more taste from a 1st female PM,” she added.

Tweetin’ up a storm

Rose’s timely Tweets prompted a brief panel discussion on 7’s live Sunrise show this morning.

Deputy Leader of the Opposition Julie Bishop expressed her personal view on the debate: “As a Christian, there are sensitivities around the institution of marriage – a union between a man and a woman. Same-sex couples can have Civil Unions in a number of states, and if they’re in a de-facto relationship they have the same rights as a heterosexual couple.

“But it does come down to respecting the differing views, and I think on this issue, as with other, similar issues, we’ll just have to agree to disagree,” she added.

“In terms of it being a conscience vote, I think there aren’t any plans afoot to change the Marriage Act at a Federal level, and so it won’t come to it. But that’s my personal view and I respect the views of others.”

Minister for Housing Tanya Plibersek was next to wade in: “It doesn’t really come as a surprise,” she said of Gillard’s statement. “It has been Labor Party policy for some time, to say that marriage is between a man and a woman… This is a decision that was made at the last Party Conference, and the one before, I think. So it does reflect party policy.”

Better Homes and Gardens editor Julia Zaetta took the opposite view. “If we’re going on personal views, I understand what Julia’s doing, but I have a great sense that same-sex marriages should be allowed.

“I base it on the fact that there’s a lot of heterosexual marriages that don’t work, and there’s a lot of gay marriages that do. So I’m a great supporter of allowing same-sex marriage. I would make that happen instantly. In spite of the other reforms, I think that would be the big one.”

Ruby’s last word

Responding to the on-air discussion, Ruby Rose was keen to clarify her position via Twitter again this morning.

“It’s not Me vs. Gillard,” she assured her fans. “It’s just I think it’s time we allow everyone the ability to love and marry if they choose.

“It’s discrimination and I believe we are above that – it’s 2010.”
