Tasmania’s Lower House of Parliament has OK’ed new laws to recognize same-sex marriages and civil unions conducted in the few forward-thinking countries and states where they are legal.
This means that civil unioned couples from New Zealand or married gay couples from Canada – for just two examples – will be recognized as legally partnered in Tasmania, though the Aussie state’s gay and lesbian citizens cannot yet marry there themselves.
It’s a small step forward, but an important one – and it proved to be fairly non-controversial as only three of the 25 Members of the House of Assembly voted against it, reports the ABC.
