Out Adelaide-born singer Sia’s newest album We Are Born has been announced as the winner of the 2010 ARIA Award for Best Pop Release.

“With a diverse range, she has channelled upbeat, energetic pop into her fifth album,” say the ARIA judges.

“Each song on the album is vibrant and playful with celebratory handclaps and an impossibly catchy collection of lyrical hooks. The anthem Clap Your Hands is case in point – a song so instantly familiar that it’s almost hard to believe it hasn’t been around forever.

“With a knack for clever feel-good melodies, give it up for Australia’s new pop princess Sia.”

Sia recently told Same Same that she’d tried to release a very similar poppy album a few years ago under a different label, but was told it would confuse fans of her down-tempo tracks.

“They said to me ‘this is career suicide, we don’t know what to do with this. You’re a down-tempo artist, your fans will be confused.’ And I was like, ‘first of all, what fans? I’ve only sold 6,000 records!’” she laughed.

The 2010 ARIA Awards will be broadcast on Network Ten on Sunday (7 Nov) at 8:30pm. Find out more about the Awards here.
