South Australia is joining Victoria and Tasmania in the increasingly exciting race to legalise gay marriage.

Tammy Franks of the Green Party and Ian Hunter of the Labor Party are today announcing their joint plan to sponsor a marriage equality bill for the state, reports the ABC.

The MPs were planning separate bills but banded together after they learned of each others’ efforts.

“We’re seeing more and more senior Labor Party members and ministers in the Federal Government come out and say they support same sex marriage,” Hunter explains.

“It’s inevitable. Why not bite the bullet and do it?”

Increasing numbers of MPs are defying Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s assertion that marriage should only be legal between a man and a woman.

Meanwhile, top lawyers say John Howard’s federal-level measure to make marriage only for heterosexual couples created the possibility for individual states to decide for themselves on the issue.

Back in 1975, South Australia was the first state in Australia to legalise sexual conduct between men.

Same Same’s guide to Labor MPs and groups who disagree with Julia Gillard on the gay marriage issue is here.
