As most would know Julia Gillard is in a de facto relationship hairdresser Tim Mathieson. Some consider Julia Gillard’s choice of relationship unusual for someone who is called upon to make decisions on topics such as marriage, especially that of same-sex marriage.

Marriage equality advocates have now called on the Prime Minister’s partner to support the right of same-sex couples to marry, following a revelation that Tim Mathieson would indeed like to marry Gillard.

Australian Marriage Equality National Convener Alex Greenwich says that while Mr Mathieson and Ms Gillard have the right and choice to marry, Australian same-sex partners do not, and that’s not fair.

“Mr Mathieson is clearly someone who values marriage and the choice to marry, so we call on him to support the choice of same-sex couples to marry,” Greenwich points out.

“We wish Mr Mathieson and Ms Gillard well if they choose to marry, but we also urge them to imagine how they would feel if there was a law prohibiting their marriage.

“All Australians deserve the same choices available to Mr Mathieson and Ms Gillard.”

One would think that while we have the first Australian female Prime Minister – who is in a de facto relationship, and is also a self-proclaimed atheist – the support of the simple human right of marriage equality would be a given. However it is not.

Everyone should have the right to marry, and hopefully by putting pressure on Tim Mathieson and bringing awareness to a right that both he and Julia Gillard seem to take for granted, that change might be on the horizon.

But Gillard continues to oppose marriage equality, repeatedly stating that marriage should remain between a man and a women.

Do you think Mr Mathieson will show support?
