Tomorrow (Saturday 13 August) marks the seven year anniversary since our government placed the ban on same-sex marriage, and the Equal Love lobby is using this anniversary of injustice to hold Marriage Equality Rallies throughout Australia as a National Day of Action.
In each state, Equal Love is encouraging the LGBT community and their supporters to shout loud that the seven-year ban on marriage equality is seven years too long!
Farida Iqbal of Equal Love in Canberra says tomorrow’s rallies are particularly important. “The ALP national conference is looming,” she points out. “Julia Gillard has announced that she will stubbornly oppose the push for the Labor Party to adopt a policy of equal marriage rights. So we will have a fight on our hands.
“It has never been more important for the queer community and its supporters to take to the streets.”
A new major survey by News Limited has found that 7/10 agree with same-sex marriage, with each state ranking as follows – TAS 74%, ACT 73%, VIC 70%, WA 70%, NSW 69%, QLD 67% and NT 67%.
Another interesting point the survey makes is that more females support same-sex marriage then males.
So why does our government continue to remain firmly against what a nation as a whole supports?
Being stagnant and sitting by waiting for someone else to bring the change is not an option. Change begins with you! The only way marriage equality can be found is through demanding that our government must change the Marriage Act.
So tomorrow I urge you to attend an Equal Love Rally nearby and bring as many people you can, and declare marriage equality for all!
Each rally will host a line-up of guest speakers, entertainment, which will then be followed by a march for marriage equality.
