Sydney is about to get a new addition to Oxford Street with the unveiling of a new gay bar next week.

Following its stunning makeover, new owners and new management, Ruby Rabbit is set to launch a weekly gay event from Saturday November 19.

House Party will be taking over all three levels of the venue every Saturday night.

Behind the new venture is Tim Duggan, who has been turning straight events gay since 2004 with Fag Tag, and who turned Nevermind gay with Shane Jenek AKA Courtney Act two and a half years ago.

“In some strange way I feel like part of my mission in life is to push the boundaries of gay Australia and make our scene as great as it can possibly be,” Duggan says.

“Think of the best house party you’ve ever been to, and then multiply that by ten,” he says. “That is what’s going to happen at House Party every Saturday. It’s aimed to be your new first stop on Oxford Street, come for a pre-drink and stay for the night.”

Ruby Rabbit is a brand new venue in a large terrace-style building on Oxford Street, just down from Taylor Square at 231 Oxford Street. The venue was recently gutted and re-built from the inside out, and is one of the most exciting things to hit Sydney’s gay scene in years.

“It reminds me of a rambling mansion,” says Duggan. “The ground floor is like the wine cellar, where you can crash in comfy booths and drink wine and cocktails. The middle floor is the bedroom. That is, if your bedroom included a DJ, a bar, moving lights and a heaving dancefloor. And the top floor’s the living room, with couches, chairs, an indoor/outdoor smoking balcony and a large bar. And just like a good house party, there’s food available until 3am.”

Ruby Rabbit owner Sue Loumbos is just as enthusiastic. “Ruby Rabbit was designed to not only inspire but to bring everyone together as a community,” she says. “It has always been a vision of mine to embrace the heart of Oxford Street.”

House Party will take over Ruby Rabbit every Saturday night, running from 10pm to 3am for $10 entry.

Meanwhile there’s a mix of events on Friday nights at the venue, including lesbian hotspot Bitch Boutique on the last Friday of each month.
