A new TV ad for Libra tampons playing in Australia and New Zealand is “damaging and demeaning” to transpeople, say viewers who want the campaign yanked.

The ad shows two women audaciously competing with each other in a nightclub bathroom. One of them shows she uses Libra tampons, which appears to win their battle.

Take a look below…

On online petition to have the ad removed has almost reached its target of 1,000 signatures, as Libra also faces criticism on its Facebook and Twitter pages.

This comment on the petition page seems to sum up the mood – “This ad is ridiculous and offensive,” writes Shara. “Having tampons in your purse does not make you a ‘real’ woman – and the blatant transphobia is disgusting. I dare this company to solidly define a ‘real’ woman, because it cannot be done. We come in all shapes, colours, sizes, and not all of us are born with female anatomy, or have them now.

“Libra is insinuating that any woman who does not have a period is not a woman. What about post-menopausal women, women who have hyterectomies, or for some other reason do not menstruate?

“This ad needs to go, immediately,” she concludes. “It is offensive to all kinds of women, and to trans people of all genders. Ads like this do not make me want to buy your product.”

%u200E2012 STOP 'Trans*, Intersex and Gender Variance' phobia campaigning

Thank you Libra for giving us the momentum to get this rolling. There are a number of us who have been discussing forming a Nation, now possibly an International, Action Group to challenge primarily misogyny directed at and within the Trans*, Intersex and Gender Variance Communities.

The aim would be along the lines of challenging such attitude where ever they are found by education, alliances, naming and shaming, boycotts, whatever it takes. In Australia a national group supported by local groups in each State would seem the best way of involving as many people as possibly and reaching out to all sections of the community.

Alliances with other groups such as ACON in NSW and other LGB peak bodies, Those advocating for Sex worker rights, women's and feminist groups, etc in a way where we keep control of the campaign would seems the best way of building critical mass.

For me, through my transition and now I am increasingly aware of how the patriarchal society we live in discriminates, oppresses, demeans and marginalises not only us but most women, gays, lesbians and bisexuals. Looking at it purely from a trans* perspective this translates in to lack of access to medicare coverage of necessary surgeries and other treatments, lack of employment opportunities, violence and ridicule. Nearly every issue effecting our equal human rights can be traced back to the patriarch. If we are able reduce the male dominance of our society, then we have a greater chance of achieving the rights that should not have been denied us. Stopping 'Trans*, Intersex and Gender Variance' phobia is a big part of that and should be our unified struggle and that of all others impact in a similar way.

It's Time the majority of our society was given equal rights and the true respect that each human being should be able to enjoy regardless of their sex, gender, race, age, disability ....

If you are interested in being involve please let Indi or me know ... we will need all the troops we can muster to wage a long war against our oppression.

Watch the 'Make Transphobia and Transmisogny History in 2012' Facebook page as we getting rolling.
