The message “LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR – NOT HATE GAYS” is one of several gay-friendly slogans spray-painted onto a church crusading against marriage equality in Newcastle.

Reverend Dr Ian Copland at the Wallsend Presbyterian Church displayed a sign saying “Even tradies know you need both male and female joints to make a marriage”, and tells the Newcastle Herald that despite the vandal attack, he’s not going to give up sharing his traditional marriage message.

Other graffiti sprayed on the front of the church says “HOMOPHOBIA IS GAY”, “TOLERANCE IS A VIRTUE – GAYS CAN, YOU CAN TRY!”

It’s not the first time Copland’s church has been the centre of a storm on the marriage equality issue. But he says he’s got no regrets or any malice towards the spraying messenger. “It only takes one or two cowards,” he told the newspaper. “You can’t blame the whole homosexual community. That would be wrong.”

Newcastle resident Trine Deans tells Same Same she doesn’t condone vandalism but the church has ignited rage with its message.

“On a day like Valentines Day, the churches should be preaching love not spilling words of hate out onto the main road,” she says. “It saddens and disappoints me that this kind of narrow mindedness still exists.”

After 1,000 votes, 60% of the readers of the Newcastle Herald agree with marriage equality. See the paper’s poll here.

"Think not that I am come to send peace: I came not to send peace but a sword." (Matthew 10:34)
"He that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one." (Luke 22:36)
"But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me." (Luke 19:27. In a parable, but spoken of favorably.)

The burning of unbelievers during the Inquisition was based on the words of Jesus: "If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned." (John 15:6)

Jesus looked at his critics "with anger" (Mark 3:5), and attacked merchants with a whip (John 2:15). He showed his respect for life by drowning innocent animals (Matthew 8:32). He refused to heal a sick child until he was pressured by the mother (Matthew 15:22-28).

The most revealing aspect of his character was his promotion of eternal torment. "The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth." (Matthew 13:41-42)
"And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched." (Mark 9:43)

I can keep going if you want.

Why do religious people only read the bits they like?

Irene, being a person initiated into the Catholic faith and having worked in one of their institutions, I can tell you now that a lot of Catholics never ever read the gospels themselves and only learn the gospel during holy mass. Most of the time they are following the dogma and catechism of the church and not purely from the teaching of Jesus.

I've also had rebellious religious tell me to follow my own path and view Christ as an example only and not as an idol to be worshipped or to follow his re-interpreted teachings literally since, they are not entirely true and also I have my own free will and conscious from which I am to decide what is right and wrong. One even quoted Gandhi's 'I like your Christ, yet your Christians are nothing like your Christ' to me.

And to be honest I find most of the folk who are right out there pushing for marriage equality are not much different than the Christians who are against same sex marriage. They have their own agenda and never listen to alternative sides of the argument.

^ Here you have an example of just how religious extremists use out of context quotes to support their ridiculous anti-gay agendas, the same can be done by anti-religious people to support their agendas. /facepalm
