NSW Greens MP Cate Faehrmann is telling the federal government to hurry up on marriage equality, and says she wants your support the encouraging NSW Upper House MPs to join the call.
“I just gave notice of a motion calling on the Commonwealth to amend the Marriage Act 1961 to provide for marriage equality,” says the politician, who is shown in the photo above with Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young (right) at last year’s Mardi Gras Parade.
Faehrmann’s video message is below…
The Greens MP’s motion is similar to the one which passed successfully by the Tasmanian House of Assembly in September 2011. The ACT has also officially confirmed its support for changing the Marriage Act.
“With public support at around 62%, equal marriage is now well and truly an issue that wont go away,” she adds.
“Denying anyone the right to marry who they love is ludicrous. It’s last century and its time our Federal Parliament caught up.”
It is expected that both Labor and Coalition MPs would be granted a conscience vote on Faehrmann’s motion.
