Concerned about homophobia in its outer suburbs, LGBT citizens in the NSW city of Newcastle have gotten together to create their own It Gets Better video.
The video was supported by the Newcastle City Council and features several of the city’s residents telling their personal stories of facing tough times and school and coming out. Sydney choregrapher Wil Sabin and DJ’s Murray Hood and James Tobin also appear.
It was really emotional compiling and editing the videos at times, says its co-producer Ashley Doran. “Whilst most of us had our own traumas and demons that we dealt with at school through bullying and exclusion, I think we sometimes forget what we went through – because it does get better as an adult and the good memories always overcome the bad ones.
Fellow co-producer Aaron Little agrees. “We ended up with so many submissions we just didn’t know what to do with them – while some got left on the cutting-room floor, we fortunately came up with this really rich narrative where about a dozen of the submissions unite and intertwine to tell a story.
“After being bullied at school, coming out to friends and families, heartbreak, losing friends and gaining better ones, building a support network, even when they were at the bottom of the pits, they all still overcame the odds to go on to the really fulfilling lives they are currently leading.”
