Thunderous applause and high-pitched cheers greeted the roar of the Dykes on Bikes’ engines on Saturday night, as some rain did not deter hundreds of floats containing thousands of Sydney Mardi Gras Parade marchers from strutting their stuff down the strip.

Pictured below, supermum and marriage equality crusader Shelly Argent was this year’s Chief of Parade, joining her husband and gay son on the route.

Argent was one of more than 9100 participants and 134 floats working their way up the parade route, with the rain clearing as the spectacular night rumbled on.

Among several highlights was the Kylie Minogue-inspired K25 float, which saw over 130 dancers pay homage to the petite singer and her 25 year career in the music industry. Her long-standing support of the LGBTI community saw her get a special show in Taylor Square and receive a big bunch of flowers as she posed for pics with the dancers. She was thrilled:

“Kylie’s visit is a very special gift to Sydney this year and our K25 float was a way of returning that love back to her,” said Mardi Gras CEO Michael Rolik.

“It was just one of a myriad of amazing entrants that made this year’s parade one of the most exhilarating we’ve ever seen.”
